I served as Engineering Officer aboard the Stoddard in 1952. The reunion plans sound wonderful, and I surely wish that Mary and I could attend and participate, but, because of my MS, walking is difficult for me and pain prevents me from doing many things would like to do. Although I probably would not know many of the members, but I would surely like to get acquainted with all of you. I saw a couple of names mentioned in the newsletters that I remember - Bob Wooden, Troy Puckett. I hope you all have a wonderful time and I am anxious to hear all about it.

My Father served aboard the Stoddard in around 1957-60 era. His name was Donald Bruce Hall. He was in radar operations.

My father was killed by a Drunk driver when I was 12. I would like his name to live on with this web site. I don't know how but I ended up as an air traffic control watching a radar scope myself. I just hope I make him proud.

I last visited the USS Stoddard in Long Beach in late 1977-early 1978. She had a bull's-eye painted on the side, and without fuel or water aboard, was bobbling alongside the pier from every wake in the harbor. It was a sad afternoon for me.

I was just surfing the net one night and came upon the military net so I just scrolled down and just put in some info., and this evening when I checked my e-mail I was surprised to see your mess. I am retired from the auto repair business.

Our home port was S.D. California. We were part of the 5th fleet at that time. I don't really remember to many of my shipmates- I do remember the 2nd time that we crossed the E-Q- we had a 90day wonder fresh from the ACADEMY. I am sure that he will never forget his becoming a SHELLBACK- I don't know if they still have the orientation the way we did back then or not- probably not. If you are ever in URBANA-CHAMPAIGN , ILLINOIS please look me up- I am in the phone book.

Joined the Navy on July 22, 1950. Boot camp and Machinist Mate a School at Great Lakes. Assigned to the Stoddard crew in January 1951 during its reactivation; on board for re-commissioning March 9, 1951. Duties included evaporators, water king and forward engine room Watch Head. Battle stations were No. 5, 5" gun mount, then various stations in forward engine room. Enjoyed two trips to Guantanamo, Cuba and two Mediterranean cruises despite my sensitivity to heavy seas. During slack periods on the ship I studied English and mathematics and read many paperbacks. Also enjoyed cribbage, hearts, chess, craps, letter-writing, shore tours, shuffleboard, skating, swimming, having a drink with shipmates, and seeking out girls in ballrooms and bars; in other words my life and joys at that time were those of a typical white hat sailor.

Discharged on June 2, 1954 and married my first wife two weeks later. I continued with math studies while working at Valvoline Oil Co in PA and received a high school diploma. Began evening studies at Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA in the summer of 1955. Received BS Physics in June 1959. Attended graduate school at Case Western Reserve, Cleveland, OH and received an MS in Physics in 1963. Set up and taught a course in one of our county's first engineering oriented semiconductor teaching/research laboratory in 1964 in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Ohio State University (OSU). At the same time, continued studies and received PhD in Nuclear Engineering from OSU in 1971.

Met Marilyn while ice skating at OSU in 1972. We were married January 4, 1975 and she was "blessed" with an instant family of three children. By fall of 1976, we had a son, Timothy Joseph (TJ), and started our own company, Intek, Inc. the same year. Marilyn joined the business full time in 1989. We are in good heath and have "fun" working (we think) and for this reason, no longer seriously consider retirement. We do, however, "go" when we hear the call - and the most frequent call is a return to sea for me aboard our 42 ft yacht Harvest Moon, docked at various ports along the southeastern coast. We have four children Jodean (41), Brad (40, retired Navy), Brian (28, ex-Navy, BA) and TJ (21, now in graduate school at Univ. of Michigan as a candidate for a PhD in Electrical Engineering), and four grandchildren. We have attended and enjoyed the Stoddard Reunions since the third after seeing it's announcement in Tin Can Sailors. I am a life member of Tin Can Sailors and of the VFW Post 10047 North Las Vegas.

I ran one tour to Vietnam on Stoddard. We had a lot of problems with the radar going down as parts were in short supply. We came back to the states (San Diego) and were notified she was going to be decommissioned. I was on the crew for this event. I will never forget our trip from San Diego to San Francisco. I was on two other destroyers after Stoddard, the Kyes DD787 and Larson DD830.

Being the skipper of the USS Stoddard from 1955- 1957 was a true highlight of my Navy career that continued until 1967 when I decided to retire. She was an outstanding ship - mostly because her officers and crew were the best. While I know the whereabouts of very few of my Stoddard shipmates of my time, I will do what I can to get the word out to them. Any news about the reunions would be appreciated, including identification of when each attendee was on the ship, if that information is available. Congratulations for getting this project started - and with my thanks and appreciation for organizing the reunion.

After the Stoddard was decommissioned, I was discharged from the Navy July 30, 1946. I started farming the family farm in the fall of 1946. We retired in 1988 but still work the farm. My wife Lillie and I spend our winters in Arizona. We attended the first reunion in North Platte, NE. This reunion was instigated by Bob Pelster. We also attended the reunion in Fort Worth, TX. I regret that we cannot attend this reunion but I had a total knee replacement recently, I am doing fine. Hope you have a great reunion.

Enlisted in the Navy in 1950. Assigned to the Stoddard crew as FN following boot training at Newport, RI in January 1951. Duty station was the forward engine room standing steaming watch on the evaporators. Because the Stoddard had below normal evaporator water yield we received a lot of grumbling from the crew when the ship had to go on water hours at sea. Nearly all new crew members assigned to keep coffee pots full made the mistake of drawing salt water during these hours. This gave the senior POs an opportunity to exercise their "authoritative chewing" powers.

I was discharged in September 1954 and became a fireman with the Falmouth Fire Department where I stayed for 35 years. I enjoyed this service and was fascinated with arson investigation and the science of fire fighting.

I married Ann on 10 September 1956 and we have two children, Richard (41) living in Falmouth and Joan (39) whose home is in St. Petersburg, FL. We have two grandchildren. Ann and I like traveling the east coast to visit friends and family. Our real love is boating; we go north to Nova Scotia for the annual lobster festival, Martha's Vineyard is a usual weekly event between April and December. My golf outings have been reduced to 3 times a year; and after 16 years playing on the old timers hockey team, the skates are now hanging in the garage. I am a member of the Elks and the Fire Fighters Association. I learned about the Stoddard reunions through Joe Harpster.

Stoddard: 61 Jun - 63 Jun; Rating: Lt.jg / Capt

I graduated from the US Naval Academy is June 1961, married my wonderful wife Caroline, and two months later, after moving across the country to Long Beach, CA, reported to the Stoddard which was in dry dock with the rest of our 4 ship destroyer division (211). I was assigned as the First Lieutenant and I loved the job. I had a great CPO who taught me the ropes, and some well seasoned petty officers who kept the 50 or so non rated sailors in line.

The most interesting thing I think I experienced in this job was the rescue of the crew of a sinking Greek freighter in SE Asia. Patrolling the Straits of Formosa was also a little unnerving, given the tense situation that existed between Taiwan and China in 1962. After a year in one of the best jobs I had in 30 years in the Navy, I was assigned as the ASW Officer. The experience I gained in this job served me well throughout the rest of my career.

After the Stoddard, I served on 2 more destroyers, then switched to Engineering Duty, and for the next 20 years worked in Naval Shipyards and other industrial, ocean engineering and undersea warfare related jobs. I retired from the Navy in 1991 at the conclusion of my second shore command tour, and currently work for the Applied Research Lab, Penn State University.

Throughout my career Caroline and our four girls have followed me back and forth across the country and up and down the coasts. The first of our girls was born while I was assigned to the Stoddard, and we took her aboard on numerous occasions as a baby. All of our children have their own careers, respectively in nursing, veterinary medicine, chiropractic medicine and wildlife management. We are the proud grandparents of three boys and a girl.

My activities include golf, camping, diving and a variety of other activities, all of which I will be doing more of when I retire completely in the near future.

I joined the Naval Reserve in 1950 in Lancaster, PA. Volunteered for active duty in November 1951. Basic training was at Bainbridge, MD. I boarded the Stoddard in April 1952; home port was Newport, RI. I made two trips to the Mediterranean Sea - in 1952 and 1953. I was a seaman first division gunnery department. My battle station was loader on twin 50s. I left the Stoddard in Trieste, Italy to be discharged two months early because the Korean War was over. I was discharged at Boston Naval Yard in September 1953. Returning to PA, I rejoined my family's well drilling business. Married my wife Evelyn in 1954. We have a son, Jim Jr., and a daughter, Joni. In 1966 I formed my own swimming pool service and supply company, the J L Honberger Co., Inc. My wife and I and both our children have chosen our family business as their careers.

I made two WestPac cruises aboard the "Steamin' Demon", spending about four months off the coast of Vietnam in early 1967 and again in the latter half of 1968. I remember cruising up and down the Vietnam coast with the 5" guns blazing away day and night at coastal targets and in support of ground troops. We were an ongoing member of the "Thousand Rounds per Week" club. I also recall a hazardous incident during which we took a hit at the waterline in an aft berthing compartment. Nobody was hurt and we had to limp over to Sasebo, Japan for dry dock repairs.

My best memories are of the ports we visited during our cruises, including Hong Kong, Sasebo, Guam, Midway, Hawaii, Kaohsiung, and side trips to Manila, Tokyo, the red-China border, Mount Fuji, etc. I'm still using some of the stereo equipment I brought back more than 30 years ago.

Following my four-year tour of duty, I completed college in Southern California and am currently the Planning Manager of the City of Lynnwood in the Seattle area. My wife Bonnie and I live in Mill Creek and are looking forward to the reunion.

HI, THIS IS FORMER CREW MEMBER HARRY HOUSE SERVED ON THE DD 566 DURING THE LAST PART OF MY TOUR WITH THE NAVY. I CAME ABOARD IN 1958.

I BELIEVE AT VALLIJO, BUT I'M NOT TOO SURE ON THAT. MADE ONE AND HALF CRUSE ON HER TO JAPAN. WAS DISCHARGED AT DIEGO FEB 1960. SERVED IN THE DECK CREW AFT. ONLY GOT TO LEADING SEAMAN BUT WAS NOT WAR YEARS SO NO FAST RANKS. THE CAPTAIN WAS LT COMMANDER WILCOX I BELIEVE. MEMORY PLAYS TRICKS ON YOU BUT I'M SURE I'M RIGHT. MY FIRST PLACEMENT ON BOARD WAS TO SHARPEN KNIVES FOR THE CREW. DURING OUR PULLOUT FROM THE DOCK I CUT A HAUSER WHICH HAD BECOME STUCK ON A PILING. LATER THE CAPTAIN CHEWED ME OUT ROYALLY AND THEN TURNED AROUND AN THANKED ME FOR SAVING THE STERN FROM A COLLISION WITH THE DOCK. HE HAD APPLIED FULL AHEAD WHEN THE LINES WERE ORDERED REMOVED. THAT ALONE MAKES ME PROUD TO HAVE SERVED ON HER.

DURING THE BLOCKADE OF THE CHINA TO FORMOSA RUN NO ONE HAS STATED THAT WE WERE FIRED ON BY THE SHORE BATTERIES OF THE CHICOM. BET THAT IS NOT TO BE TALKED ABOUT.

THE NEXT THING I REMEMBER WAS THE DEPTH CHARGE RUN FOR THE ASST SEC OF NAVY, DISASTER WHEN A CHARGE WENT OFF UNDER THE STERN AND LIFTED IT OUT OF THE WATER ABOUT 25 FEET. WE ENDED UP IN DRY DOCK AND HAD TO RE-PLATE THE WHOLE STERN. COULD YOU FIND OUT HOW THE NEW SEAL HELD UP AS IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SPECIAL COMBINATION OF METAL. MY OTHER REAL MEMORY WAS CHIPPING PARTY ON THE MAIN DECK UNDER THE STARBOARD LOCKER FOR THE HEDGE-HOG AMMO LOCKER . I STUCK A CHIP HAMMER COMPLETELY THROUGH THE MAIN DECK. NO ONE HAD EVER CLEANED UP THERE AND THE RUST JUST KEPT GOING. WE HAD A HELL OF A MEETING ON THAT ONE.

THE CAPTAIN SURE THANKED ME ON THAT ONE TOO. HE WANTED ME TO REPORT TO HIM AFTER I WAS DISCHARGED BUT THE TIME THAT I HAD WOULDN'T LET ME DO IT. I HAD TO GET BACK TO ALASKA AND THE FLIGHT WAS ALL SET UP.

I NEVER DID FIND OUT WHAT HE WANTED TO SEE ME FOR, BUT I WAS PROUD AND STILL AM TO HAVE SERVED ON THE STODDARD. I WOULDN'T TRADE THAT FOR ANYTHING.

THANKS,

SEAMAN
HARRY HOUSE

I was MM3 on the Stoddard from 1951 to 1952. Joan and I cannot make this year's reunion, but thought you would enjoy the following Engineer's Lament:
You ask, "what is this life at sea?"
Talk to a seaman and not to me.
A dial, a gauge and nothing more
      Except perhaps an engine's roar.
      No sunset turning oceans red
Just bed to watch, and watch to bed.
No deep and rolling ocean swell,
But just a stinking diesel smell.
No watching the bow set the ocean boil
Just pressures and temperatures, vacuums and oil.
No thought of how neat and trim your craft
Just count the turns and check the shaft.
No salt sea air to spark the blood
But a cigarette and a cup of mud.
If you must go to sea, then lend an ear,
Don't let them make you an engineer.

I was commissioned from the U.S. Naval Academy in December 1941. Served as gunnery officer on two destroyers before reporting to the Stoddard as Executive Officer in February 1945 in the Aleutians. I eventually put the ship out of commission in July 1946 in Charleston, S.C. I was primarily a destroyer sailor rising through various commands culminating as Commodore of a nine ship squadron that saw action off Vietnam. Other assignments included Executive Officer of the Presidential Yacht, Williamsburg, two tours in Washington, D.C., staff of the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. and Commanding Officer NROTC Unit at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. After retiring from the Navy in 1972, I worked as an administrative officer for the college. While at Dartmouth, and after a second retirement, I was the college volunteer sailing coach for over 25 years and led the teams to two national championships.

I served in the first division as BM3; was pointer in the 37 director during GQ; was on the hedge hogs during ASW. I met my wife Sumiko while on the Stoddard in Kobe Japan. We have been married 39 years, have two children - Shirley who is 36 and Raymond who is 31. Dan - Greetings from Ollala, WA. This is pretty strange. 15 minutes ago or so, I sent you a message about a Norwegian Nasty experience in the summer of 1969 aboard the Skrei. I attended the Naval Academy, graduating in 1970, and got out after completing my five year obligation. In the course of that relatively short career, I served on four vessels, the Norwegian vessels Skrei and Rokk, the USS Alexander Hamilton (SSBN 617) and the Stoddard.

During the summer of 1967, I was one of many midshipmen aboard Stoddard almost all of whom were having their first experience at sea. We slept in the focsle, learning the life of an enlisted man. It was supposed to teach us to be more effective officers and I fervently believe it did. You can imagine the grief we had to put up with, things like sailors telling all the women ashore that the blue rim around the top of our hats meant that we had VD. But we had a lot of fun, too. For example, I got drunk for the first time when I was on the Stoddard, a noteworthy event for a sailor. I have a lot of wonderful memories from that cruise nearly all of which were associated with the wonderful guys who made up the crew of the Stoddard. Thanks again for the memories.
