Sad to report to you the passing of David Valenciana YN3 who served on the
Stoddard from Fall of 1956 to the spring of 1959. David had a heart
transplant in December of 1986 and again in 1993. Then he had breast cancer
and two detached retinas. Laser surgery caused him to go blind in one eye.
He had such a sweet spirit and it was a delight talking with him. In 2000
when I found out about the Stoddard, I contacted some other Stoddard
personnel who telephoned David, and his wife Olivia visited the Stoddard
website and David spent many hours going over the Stoddard material. I
talked with him in October and he seemed well, but shortly after that he
went into the hospital, the cancer had returned and he died as a result of
cancer on November 2, 2000. We had many good times together while aboard
ship and my daughter Alisa is named for his niece Alisa Valenciana.

Rest in Peace. . .
On January 30, 2004 we learned sadly that our beloved, most senior of
the Stoddard shipmates, George Vonderheid, passed away in Manhattan
Kansas on December 28, 2003.
George was 95. He was drafted 6/11/43 at age 35 and sent to Great Lakes
boot camp. Being a bank clerk, he was sent to storekeeping school in
Toledo, Ohio. After graduation, he went to the new construction pool at
Norfolk until he was sent to Bremerton, to order supplies and prepare
for the commissioning of the USS Stoddard, 4/15/44. George served aboard
her until she sailed to Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1946.
| Making it to the Philadelphia Reunion this past year was particularly
memorable to George! Your Secretary’s records do not contain a list of
the attendees of the first Reunion in North Platte, Nebraska, but we
show that George was at the 2nd Alumni Reunion in Cedar Rapid Iowa, and
has attended most of the reunions since then. |

Hi Glen,
Thanks for the info. about the reunion. I don't think I'll be able to make it this time, but who
knows, I'll try. I guess you were getting off the Stoddard about the time I was coming onboard. I
came onboard around the end of July or the first part of Oct. I started out on deck force and went
in to sickbay as a HM striker. I was there until I made Doc mad one day and he kicked me out. Do
you remember Doc? Very few people liked him. |

| In Feb 1951 I was ordered transferred from the USS Holder DD819 to Charleston
Navy Yard to recommissioning crew for the USS Stoddard DD566. At that
time I held the rank of ETC. If I remember right those in charge of the
reactivation decided to run a time trial for that operation and we went from
opening her up from mothballing state to sea trials in three weeks which at
that time was a record. I remained aboard through the eight weeks of
retraining in GTMO with a memorable weekend break in Kingston, Jamaica.
On return to the states and our home port of Newport, RI via Norfolk, I took
leave to move my family from Portsmouth, VA to Newport. No more than got
that done when I received TAD orders about 17 July, to Class "B" ET
School at Treasure Island in California. Never returned to the Stoddard
since I was offered appointment to Warrant Officer as Radio Electrician, which
I accepted. This promotion led to reassignment and consequent orders to
ET School Great Lakes as an administrator. After several more tours of
duty on various stations I retired after 25 years of active duty in Oct 1962.

Bought a summer cottage on St. Lawrence River in 1978. Fishing is great and
golf once or twice a year. Retired in 1986 after 30 years with Chevrolet
Division of GM. My hobby is woodworking - spend most of winter in the cellar
making crafts of all seasons: Christmas, Halloween etc. Now just shovel snow
in winter and mow lawn in summer. My friend from the Stoddard, Joe Harpster,
located me through the Internet. This is our first Stoddard reunion.

I just received the newsletter regarding the 12th annual.
I was going over some of the past correspondence and I see out of the 56
Plank owners accounted for, 16 were in my original “O” Division. I was
very proud of my Division and they did an excellent job. In rapid fire we
got off 3-second shots and in shore bombardments we fired 5-second salvos.
I remember our first air action at Okinawa. I had just relieved the
watch in the Director when combat reported bogies to port. trained the
Director and two ready guns to the target and saw in the scope a 2-engine
plane. Since we had no 2-engine planes in the area I ordered “action
port--commence firing!” General quarters sounded and I never dreamed
battle stations could be manned so fast.
I spent five years on Destroyers: the Lamberton, the Stoddard, the
English and the Livermore, as Engineering Officer, Gunnery Officer, Executive
Officer and Commanding officer and I consider myself as a Destroyerman, even
though I spent fifteen more years in the Supply Corps.
We would like to be able to attend the 12th reunion, but turning
80 in May might slow me down. You can authenticate my signature with the one
on the original log entry.
Below is M.E. Weedlun biography from
USS Stoddard Third Reunion October, 1991 Fort Worth, Tx:
At the time of the USS Stoddard's commissioning ceremonies I was the first
Watch Officer at the gangway and had the honor of making the first entry
into the ship's log, therefore I am not in the official Navy pictures.
Garnett and I were married on August 21, 1943 in San Diego. She stayed in
Glendale, CA while I was overseas. After the war she followed me to Norfolk,
Baltimore, Portland, Boston, Charleston, SC and Bayonne, NJ. In order to
have more stability in our lives I transferred to the Supply Corps branch of
the Navy. I then had better tours of shore duty at San Diego, Oakland,
Washington DC, Mechanicsville, PA, Detroit and overseas duty at Pearl Harbor
and Guam. During the Korean War I was again at sea on a fleet issue ship,
USS Warrich AKA19 and later on a repair ship USS Ajaz AR6.
I retired in September 1962 and we have made Arvada, CO our permanent
home since then. I have held a variety of jobs since then. Working at Martin
Marietta (space), Climax Molybdenum Co. (mining), Cameo Interiors (carpet
and drapes), and Joyner Real Estate, so I guess you could call me a
Jack-of-all trades and master of none.
We have two sons, Larry was born in 1948 and got his education at various
schools throughout the world, while Tom got his education from one school
system. Both are graduates of the University of Colorado. We have one
grandchild, Noelle.

| Today, I ran cross, more or less purely by accident, the website for the STODDARD, as I was doing a little research while talking to the IT manager for a trade association I work for in Washington. Seeing that I am not listed as deceased -- good -- or MIA -- good -- on the alumni roster on the website for the STODDARD, I thought that I would let you know I served on DD-566 from around June 1967 to the late Fall of 1968, as I was transferred to CHINFO at the Pentagon in late December of 1968 where I worked until my discharge in June 1970. During my first Vietnam tour in 1967 I worked in the Weapons Department [during
GQ, I manned Mount 53 putting in powder cartridges], while by the second tour in 1968 I worked in the Ship's Office and was the Captain's phone talker on the bridge during
GQ. Great photo collection here. |

We have always enjoyed the gatherings, but it gets a little tougher
physically to make it each year. I believe it was Webster who said,
"The autumn of life is here and I feel the frost of age." Of
course, we are certainly not the only golden oldies with aging troubles. If
we don't show, remember that our minds say go but the bodies say no.
Robert is threatening to fly us to London in the fall. He is in and out
of there - and Paris - and is preparing to leave again in a couple of weeks.
He is taking up residence at Kensington Palace Gardens for this tour of
duty. I'm not sure whether we will make that or not. I really don't want to
bore you with why the timbers in this old hull creak louder by the day - and
for that matter, I try to forget about it.
All is not negative in this house ... Lots of smiles, laughs, keeping up
with politics, late evening reading, skeet shooting, sailing, the movies,
and on and on, with occasional side trips to Houston when #1 Son is at home.
Oh, by the way, we hit Fredericksburg when their peach crop is good.
We appreciate your interest in us and keeping us in touch with what is
going on with the crew! YOU ARE A JEWEL!
I had lunch today with Pat and Carol Duncan in Fort Worth. Pat is being
lined up for knee replacements. He is having a lot of trouble walking
too. The bottom line in all of this, Marilyn, is GO AND DO WHILE YOU
CAN! Have fun whatever you do.
Our best wishes to all,
Don

| I was born in Bessemer, Alabama near Birmingham. I left the University of
Alabama in November 1942 to enlist in the Navy and went to boot camp at Naval
Training Station, San Diego, CA, then Grad #1 Electrical School there.
Transferred to the US Marine base in Quantico, VA where I studied ordinance,
Combat and Fire Control School; then on to Mare Island (Vallejo) CA for
anti-craft and anti-personnel support for the First Marine Division. My orders
were then changed to serve on the U.S. Stoddard which was being commissioned
in Seattle, Washington. I am very proud to have been one of the original crew
which placed the USS Stoddard in commission. I was a fire control tech, battle
station was in the main battery director, I was the pointer operator. I
remained on board the Stoddard until the war was over and we returned to the
Philadelphia Naval Yard. I left the Stoddard February, 1946 for discharge as a
Fire Controlman 2c in Memphis, Tennessee.
worked for the Maytag Company in Newton, Iowa for 24 years in sales
and distribution management. Then I worked for Vulcan Materials Company for 12
years, performing a variety of office functions. In 1985 I suffered two heart
attacks which placed me on disability. I am still very active and serve
officially in several organizations: I am a life time member of VFW Post
#3492, serve actively at Vulcan Materials Retirement Club, G. & B.
Corporation (commercial rental property), Concerned Citizens of Hoover,
(Political Action Committee, which I co-founded), and Friends of Hoover.
I married shortly after discharge and have been blessed with three lovely
daughters, Janice, Wanda, and Donna. They are married and have presented me
with seven grandchildren, who are just "Grand." In 1997, Betty and I
were married after long courtship. My retirement years have been happy and
satisfying. It is said that the people that have the most birthdays will live
the longest, I intend to follow that philosophy. Best wishes to all of my
shipmates.

If anyone has any pictures that they have scanned and would would be
willing to send them to me I would greatly appreciate it, especially any

like to know if anyone knows where Gerry Guhde, Frank Turro, M D Williams or
others would be living now.

| Hello There,
While looking over your site I found a picture of my grandfather.
He was one of the shipmates holding the Japanese flag. His name was
Arthur C. Yen.
I was just wondering where you might have gotten that picture, and if you
know of any others.
My grandfather passed away about 4 years ago, and my family and I have
been searching and searching for pictures or anything documented about
his term aboard the U.S.S Stoddard.
I understand you probably have better things to do than track down things
on my grandfather but I thought Id ask anyways :)
Any help is appreciated. By the way, thank you for having that one
picture of my grandfather, it has brought warmth to all of our hearts.
Thank You,
Sabrina J. Yen |

| I will be sure to forward this on to my mother. I am enjoying the web site. I've already found a picture of Dad and it has overwhelmed me as we have almost no pictures of him, especially from this time period. Thank you very much for contacting us.
There is one other thing that maybe you can help me with. At Dad's funeral one of his old navy friends read a poem that was supposedly read when men had to be buried at sea. It was quite touching and I've hoped to find a copy of it since then, but have had no luck. Do you by chance know what I am referring to, and, if so, could you tell me where to get a copy? I would be most appreciative.
I am also attaching the few pictures of Dad that I have. They are all from 1986 after he had been diagnosed with lung cancer and had undergone a couple rounds of chemotherapy, so he doesn't really look like himself, but it's what I have. The group shot is of my mother, Shirley; my wife, June; and my son Jason. Feel free to share them with others or even post them on the web site if you like.
Thanks again
Bob
